Is it possible to be young and a Christian in 2020?
Christianity is sometimes presented in such a way that young people to stay away from it. It is displayed as being nothing but bondage and not at all fun. This could not be any further from the truth. In fact, being a Christian means you get to live in complete freedom, the Bible says “Christ died so that we might have liberty”.
I understand that with all the different denominations and rules that comes with Christianity, things can get a bit confusing, to say the least. This is why I value my relationship with God over anything else. While I am open to guidance from other believers, I do not allow anyone to dictate how I operate in my relationship with God. For example, at first glance, I might come off as unsaved simply by the way I dress. To many being a Christian means that you have to be clothed in long skirts, big shirts and huge church hats. I am here to tell you that none of that determines the kind of relationship you have with God. Therefore, as far as my attire goes, I work off my personal convictions, what I mean by this is if I am wearing something and it does not make me feel uncomfortable, I am not going to alter that based on someone else’s opinion.
Another huge misconception is that you can no longer have fun while you are a Christian. Or you have to all of a sudden sacrifice everything that you used to enjoy. This is completely false. While there are some things you will not be able to do again (and trust me over time you will not want to do them anyway). It is very much possible to have fun and lead an exciting life while still being a follower of Christ. I am of the opinion that as Christians we should be some of the happiest persons on the earth and I live by this. I still partake in fun activities, and I definitely do not live my life as though Christianity has me bound. It is possible to still hang out with your friends and do fun and exciting things. You do not have to stop enjoying your life in order to maintain a relationship with Christ nor do you need to become socially withdrawn. Even though I no longer party because it no longer fulfils me, I still from time to time turn on some music and have a dance with my husband. I enjoy working out and so I stick to that, I spend quality time with the people in my inner circle doing all kinds of thrilling activities. I do things that fulfil my human side as well as my spiritual side.
One thing to note is that choosing Christ can and will give you a whole new outlook on life. The entire course of my life changed the moment I decided to follow Jesus, not a Church, not a Religion but JESUS. The moment I started building a relationship with Christ for myself things around me began to change. I found a peace that I never knew even existed, I gained confidence that I could not imagine I would ever have. I felt safe, loved and accepted. All that and I never had to deprive myself of anything! I simply try my best to stay in constant prayer and listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit. In doing so I naturally lost the desire to do somethings over time because I realized that they were not enriching my growth.
It can look unappealing to become a Christian especially while young and living in this 2020 climate. I think Johnathan Mcreynolds had it right when he said: “Lord I’m split in two, part of me loves the world and the other loves you, what do I do? I want to be saved but I gotta be cool too.” Note though, you do not automatically stop being “cool” because you choose to accept Christ as your saviour. In fact, you become even more fascinating because you are now in the company of a King. Some of the “dopest” people I know are Christians and they too lead fulfilling lifestyles. I will be the first to say that some Christians have misrepresented Christ and what it truly means to be a Christian to the world. However, it is important to note that we are all equipped with our own free will. We are all able to do as we please so God cannot be held accountable for persons misrepresenting him. Think about it like this, if someone fails to highlight the good qualities in you, does that make it your fault? Or further does it mean that you do not possess those qualities? I do know that the church is not without its flaws and unfortunately, there are some who abuse and misuse the Gospel of Christ but if you pay attention there are persons all around us living the true Gospel. Besides in a world as crazy and unpredictable as this one, it pays to believe in something bigger than yourself. Why not try Christ? Think about it, what do you have to lose?
"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."
